Dear Public Economics Program Members -
A number of you have contacted me during the last few days with
questions about a memorial service for David Bradford. Two memorial
activities are planned. First, David's colleagues at Princeton are
planning a memorial service for Friday, May 20, in Princeton. I am
attaching a letter from Anne-Marie Slaughter, the dean of the Woodrow
Wilson School, with some details about a memorial fund that has been
established at the School. As more details about the May 20 service become
available, I will share them with you.
Second, when the NBER Public Economics program gathers on April 7-8
in Cambridge, there will also be a time to remember David and his many
scholarly and personal contributions to our field. David's wife Gundel and
his son Theodore and daughter-in-law Gillian, will join us for dinner at
the Harvard Faculty Club on Thursday night April 7. After dinner, there
will be several talks about David and his work, along with time for
informal reminiscences. I look forward to seeing you in April.
Jim

Dear all:
We have reserved Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall for a
memorial service for David on May 20th. Further details as to time of day
will follow. Please pass this message on to others who might want to
attend. In the meantime, we are establishing a David Bradford Memorial Fund
here at the Woodrow Wilson School. We will be renaming the STEP seminar the
Bradford Seminar in his honor; the Fund may used to support that seminar or
possibly other activities connected with his work. Anyone wishing to
contribute to the fund should make their checks payable to Princeton
University and to note in the memo line on the check this is for the David
Bradford Memorial Fund. Checks should be mailed to the following address:

David Bradford Memorial Fund
Princeton University
c/o/ Nancy Kalmikoff, Gift Records
PO Box 5357
Princeton, NJ 08543-5357

In addition to acknowledging memorial fund gifts to the donors, the
University will give Gundel regular notification of the names and addresses
of donors to the memorial fund (but not information about the specific
amount of any gift) and the total in the fund.

Finally, I have pasted in below the text of a remarkable op-ed written by
Dan Shaviro in the Wall Street Journal yesterday detailing the
contributions that Dave made to tax policy.

Best,
Anne-Marie
