Dear Program Members -

I am writing to remind you that it is time to submit nominations for
new program members. We accept nominations for Faculty Research Fellows,
who are typically untenured researchers when they join the NBER, as well as
Research Associates. The Public Economics Program typically appoints two
new members each year. Most of our appointments are at the Faculty
Research Fellow level, although we do occasionally appoint a new Research
Associate. The selection decisions are made by a "Steering Committee" that
consists of David Bradford, Austan Goolsbee, Emmanuel Saez, John Shoven,
and me. The Steering Committee also reviews existing Faculty Research
Fellows, and makes recommendations about promotions to Research
Associate. Faculty Research Fellows are usually appointed for a fixed
term, and there is no guarantee of promotion to Research Associate at the
end of this time.

We are looking for new members who will actively participate in
program activities. The best nominees are active and promising scholars
who would like to come to program meetings, interact with the current
program members, apply for research grants through the NBER, and distribute
their research in the NBER Working Paper series. The only restriction on
potential program members is that they must have a US academic
affiliation. Please send your nominations to Denis Healy
(<mailto:dhealy@nber.org>dhealy@nber.org) by January 31, with a copy to me
at poterba@mit.edu. Nominations do not need to be long -- a two-paragraph
email is fine - but they should be accompanied by a current c.v. for your
nominee. Please help to keep the program vibrant by participating in the
nomination process.

Let me also remind you of the dates for upcoming program meetings:

April 7-8 2005

Summer Institute: July 25-29

October 27-28 2005

I hope that you will mark your calendars and make every effort to
attend. All best wishes!

Jim
