Hi everyone -
Even though winter doesn't officially start until next week, it is
already time to start thinking about and planning the 2005 Summer
Institute. In the last few years we have had a number of different Summer
Institute activities within the Public Economics program, including a
meeting of the working group on Social Security and Disability, a Taxation
Economics session, a meeting on the Economics of National Security, a
workshop on Public Policy and the Environment, and a meeting on the
Economics of Real Estate and Local Public Finance. Our Summer Institute
has also coincided with the meetings of the Aging, Education, and
Well-Being of Children programs, so there has been much opportunity for
collaborative work and for attending other workshops.
I am always on the lookout for new and interesting possibilities for
Summer Institute meetings. Ideally, we should think about a new meeting
when there is a core group of researchers who are program members who would
like to present papers on a particular topic. If anyone has a suggestion
for a possible meeting, please let me know in the next week. We could
think about extending our list of activities, or possibly of rotating
through different topics from year to year.
I would ask you to also mark your calendars with the dates of
program meetings for 2005. We will meet on
April 7-8 and October 27-28. I hope that you will be able to attend.
Finally, I am just beginning to plan next year's Tax Policy and the
Economy meeting, which will take place on September 15 in Washington
DC. If you have some policy-relevant research that does not make a policy
recommendation, but may bear on current policy questions or topics that are
likely to emerge in the not-too-distant future, please let me know and I
will consider it for the meeting.
Thank you, and all best wishes for the holiday season!
Jim
