Dear NBER Affiliates -

With deep sadness, I am writing to inform you that Jeffrey Bernstein passed
away on July 22, 2009, after a valiant battle against leukemia. He was 59
years old. Jeff earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Western
Ontario in 1974 and spent most of his academic career at Carleton
University, which he joined in 1981. Carleton awarded him the Chancellor~Rs
Professor chair in 2002. In 2006, Jeff moved to Florida International
University. Jeff joined the NBER Productivity program in 1985, and was also
active in the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth. His research
focused on the modeling and measurement of productivity in a wide range of
industries, particularly regulated industries such as insurance and
telecommunications, and on the role of R&D. Those who knew Jeff well recall
his lighter side, his sense of humor, and his love of playing drums. He is
survived by his wife of 38 years, Lidia, and their daughter Jasmine. Plans
for a memorial service are not yet available.
