M E M O R A N D U M TO: Researchers in Productivity and Technical Change FROM: Lee Branstetter DATE: February 5, 2001 RE: Summer Institute 2001 Call for Papers As part of the NBER Summer Institute's "Productivity" workshop, we are holding a session on international technology diffusion as well as a session focusing on NBER- sponsored studies with the U.S. Advanced Technology Program and NBER studies conducted under the aegis of the NBER Program on Industrial Technology and Productivity, funded by the Sloan Foundation. These sessions will take place on July 24, 2001 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Recently, a number of researchers in the fields of international trade and investment have been studying international technology diffusion, using micro-level data and increasingly sophisticated empirical methodologies similar to those found in the recent productivity literature. The morning session on July 24 will seek to present some of the best recent work on international technology diffusion as a way of fostering dialogue between the traditional "productivity" research community and international economists with similar interests. The afternoon session will feature papers generated by research projects supported through the NBER-ATP Research Program and the NBER Project and Industrial Science and Technology. However, this session is not limited solely to papers sponsored through these programs. Because a range of topics will covered in this session, we also welcome submissions from affiliates of the Productivity Program whose paper topics do not fit with the themes of the other sessions in the Summer Institute workshop. If you have a paper you would like to present in either session, please send it or an abstract to: Lee Branstetter Department of Economics One Shields Avenue University of California Davis, CA 95616 TEL 530-752-3033 FAX 530-752-9382 branstet@ucdavis.edu Submissions must be received by March 15, 2001. Electronic submissions must be in PDF or Microsoft Word format. Unfortunately, space is limited at the Summer Institute and thus it will not be possible to invite everyone who receives this call for papers. Invited participants will receive logistical information at the beginning of April. If you have any questions, or need additional information, please contact Rob in the NBER conference department, 617/868-3900 phone, 617/864-1825 fax, or e-mail to confer@nber.org.
