Downtime June 3rd on NBER Unix Cluster

From: Daniel Feenberg <feenberg_at_nber.org>
Date: Fri, 31 May 2013 11:34:27 -0400 (EDT)

Reminder - 2nd notice:

On Monday June 3rd there will be a shutdown of the main fileservers for
the NBER Unix cluster starting at noon for patches and hardware upgrade to
fileservers.

For most systems, most users will experience a brief pause in availability
of home and bulk directories, but systems should not reboot and work
should continue as before within a few minutes after noon. Users will be
warned to save their work, however.

For the Aging cluster, all systems will reboot a few minutes later and
come back into service one at time starting about 1pm. A few systems that
have been unreliable in the past may stay down for several hours or more
of testing. As compensation for the downtime the Aging group has the two
new servers installed last week.

Users with very long running jobs are urged to see me. It is possible that
I can help you make your jobs faster, or at least restartable. I would
especially like to see anyone with long-running panel IV, simulation or
bootstraping.

We are sorry to interrupt your work and please contact Mohan or me if this
presents a problem for you. This scheduled downtime will enable us to
install a patch that will correct a problem that caused unscheduled
downtime last month.
