It is with deep sadness and regret that I inform you of the passing of
Leonardo Bartolini. Leo died last evening after an eleven-month illness.

Leo was a much loved and admired colleague. Many of you remember him as a
presenter and discussant at NBER meetings and summer institute. As a
senior member of the International Research staff at the NY Fed he had an
important influence on the careers of younger economists. He saw the
strengths of others? research and provided support and encouragement at
critical times.

About his own research, Leo was remarkably modest. He published
extensively in leading academic journals on the topics of monetary policy
execution, interbank markets, central bank intervention, exchange rate
regimes, and capital controls. Most recently, he had been studying
cross-country differences in monetary policy implementation and the
behavior of the money markets.

Leo inspired us with his integrity, his intelligence, and his quiet
authority. He was also a gifted mediator, a generous collaborator, and a
warm and loyal friend. We will miss him greatly.

We extend our condolences to Leo?s wife, Jin, and his young son, Lorenzo.
When we receive information from the family about funeral arrangements, we
will share it with you.
