Dear Labor Studies Program Members -

I am very sorry to share the news that Gary Chamberlain, a Research
Associate in the Labor Studies program since 1978, passed away
unexpectedly on Tuesday.  He was the Louis Berkman Professor of
Economics at Harvard University.

Chamberlain made celebrated contributions in both labor economics and
econometric theory.  His work on panel data estimation techniques,
semiparametric efficiency, the returns to schooling, and the structure
of wages was particularly influential, but his research touched on many
topics including financial economics and political economy.  He was a
Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association, a Fellow of
the Econometric Society, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Chamberlain received both his A.B. and his Ph.D. from Harvard. He spent
most of his career on the Harvard faculty; he also taught at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison for nearly a decade early in his
career.  He will be deeply missed.
