Dear Labor Studies Program Members -

I am very sorry to convey the news that Casey Ichniowksi, an NBER
Research Associate and an active participant in the Labor Studies
program since the late 1970s, suffered a brain aneurism and died
suddenly late last week.

Casey's research touched many topics in labor economics, particularly
the economic effects of public sector unions and the links between labor
inputs, human resources practices, and plant-level productivity. His
research connecting labor economics and HR management was especially
influential. His most recent working paper, a joint paper with Anne
Preston, his wife and a member of the economics faculty at Haverford
College, was a widely-discussed study of decision-making bias in the NBA
draft lottery.

Casey was an undergraduate at Harvard College, where he was introduced
to labor economics by Richard Freeman. He received his masters and
doctorate degrees from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Casey
joined the faculty at the Columbia University Graduate School of
Business in 1984; at the time of his death he was the Carson Family
Professor.

Casey's funeral will take place on Saturday morning, February 8, in Bala
Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Condolence messages may be sent to
caseycondolences_at_gmail.com <mailto:caseycondolences_at_gmail.com>.

Casey was an important contributor to the NBER and to the economics
profession more generally. He will be deeply missed.
