The W.J. Usery Chair in Labor Studies

I am e-mailing to encourage nominations and applications for a newly
endowed chair, the W.J. Usery Professor in Labor Studies, in the Economics
Department of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State
University. We are searching for a senior person, but will most certainly
consider a person at the associate professor level who has an outstanding
record.

The chair is in honor of Mr. W.J. Usery, former U.S. Secretary of Labor and
noted expert on the American workplace.

The position is for a top-flight labor economist, or person from a related
field with relevance to employment, labor market, and workplace studies in
the American economy. We are searching for a person with a combination of
excellent analytical skills, a proven track record of high-level empirical
work, and an orientation toward applied and policy-oriented labor research.

The Department of Economics at Georgia State University has 32 faculty,
including four who do research primarily in the labor area. It also has a
large doctoral program, is ranked as a top 50 department, has excellent
leadership, and provides a very collegial and rewarding work environment.
It is one of two academic departments in the Andrew Young School of Policy
Studies, a top 20 policy school. The University, located in the heart of
Atlanta, has over 30,000 students. The Department is a growing one. We are
currently searching for five new faculty (including the Usery Chair), with
the promise from the University of at least another five positions over the
next several years. More information on the School can be found at our
website, http://aysps.gsu.edu/.

The Usery Chair is an excellent opportunity. I hope you will strongly
consider applying, or encouraging others to do so. I also welcome your
suggestions on who in the field we might contact. Application procedures
are outlined in the attachment to this email.

Please feel free to call me (404/651-2922) and I would be happy to talk
with you in person about the position. We can also meet at the Boston meetings.

Best regards, Bruce Kaufman
