Dear ITI group:

Let me thank Nina Pavcnik and Marc Melitz for organizing the summer institute this year. (And congratulations to Marc on the birth of his son the day before the summer institute started!) Next year, Eric Verhoogen will join Marc in selecting the papers and chairing the sessions.

We have a decision to make about the dates for next year. We can have our usual time in the 4th week of the summer institute, which will be July 30 - August 2, 2012 at 1050 Mass Ave, but there is also an earlier opening at 1050, which is July 9 - 12, 2012. That is the first week of the summer institute and includes IFM (International Finance and Macroeconomics) and the working group ITM (International Trade and Macroeconomics), based on past practice. This first-week slot is open at 1050 because DAE (Development of the American Economy) is shifting to the 4th week for just next year. Thus, we can trade with them if we wish to.

There are pros and cons to this switch, which is just for next year. (Obviously, if we find that we like it then we could lobby for a first-week slot in the future, but this is a prized slot and the possibility of switching in the future is quite uncertain.) But I heard enough interest expressed in this possibility that it seemed to be worth putting it to a vote of the whole group.

So, by Friday, August 26 (i.e. end of the week) please let me know YES if you would like to switch to the first week of the summer institute, July 9-12 for next year, or NO if you would like to keep the dates in the 4th week, July 30 - August 2 for next year.

I'll report back on the vote tally.

Rob
