CALL FOR PROPOSALS

"Globalization and the Business Cycle"

April 27-28, 2012

The Carnegie-Rochester Conference on Public Policy is now soliciting
papers for a conference on "Globalization and the Business Cycle." This
Conference will be held at the University of Rochester on April 27-28,
2012. The papers and comments are slated for publication in a special
issue of the Journal of Monetary Economics in January 2013.

The Great Recession struck internationally. Furthermore, international
trade contracted to a far greater extent than domestic trade. Despite
these features of the recession, and despite the dramatic longer-term
rise in the international share of trade in goods and assets, most
analysis of the recession and policy has been framed in terms of closed
economies.

We ask for proposals for papers that examine the role of international
linkages in business cycles, with the word role writ large. Examples
might include: (1) The lessons from trade flows, capital flows, and
rates of exchange for identifying sources of fluctuations, (2) how trade
in goods and assets affects propagation of real and financial shocks and
the welfare consequences of cycles, (3) the efficacy of alternative
government policies, recognizing feedback through international
channels, (4) the role of the Euro in propagating aggregate shocks and
in affecting government policy responses to aggregate fluctuations.
Works with a theoretical, empirical, or quantitative emphasis are all
welcome.

The editors invite detailed abstracts of no more than two pages
describing the proposed research paper. (If a preliminary version of
the paper is available, authors may include it with their abstract.)

Proposals should be submitted electronically to Sue North
(north_at_simon.rochester.edu <e-mail to: north_at_simon.rochester.edu>),
Editorial Assistant for the Journal of Monetary Economics, no later than
September 12, 2011.

The editors, in collaboration with the Carnegie-Rochester Advisory
Board, will make the final selection of papers to be included in the
Conference. Authors will be notified by October 1, 2011 if their paper
has been selected. Authors will receive an honorarium of $2500 and be
expected to present their paper at the Conference. The papers should
represent original research not presented or published elsewhere. Since
the papers are intended for publication, authors will not be able to
publish or reprint the work elsewhere without the permission of the
editors and publisher. Please note that the editors will contact authors
only if their paper is accepted.
