Information on the ITI program

Dear ITI group:

With this annual message, I am following the lead of other programs directors and sending out information about the International Trade and Investment program.

First, let me mention that I have formed an advisory group to assist in the selection of Faculty Research Fellows and Research Associates. Pol Antras, Gordon Hanson and David Weinstein have agreed to serve in this capacity, and my thanks to them. As you may know, nominations for FRF/RA are due in the spring, at which time all RAs in (and outside) the program are invited to submit names. There is a limit of three FRF appointments per year.

Second, as the deadline for NSF applications approaches, let me encourage all members to consider submitting a grant through the Bureau. There are several benefits to you as individuals from doing so, including the excellent services provided by the grants department. But this activity also supports the broader activities of the NBER and therefore supports the ITI program. We are fortunate to have a number of members who have been successful in putting their NSF grants through the Bureau for many years, and other members who have been able to do so on an occasional basis. Let me recognize them for this important contribution to the program, and encourage other members who have not yet submitted a grant through the NBER to consider doing so. Note that it is certainly possible to subcontract or simultaneously submit a grant with your home institution and the Bureau, and the grants department can give you advice on this.

Finally, many of you are aware that a working group entitled International Trade and Organizations has been meeting for some years, sometimes jointly with ITI and sometimes on its own. The focus of the ITO group was on contracting issues in trade. Because those issues have become mainstream, it was felt that the time was right to close the separate working group and simply enfold these issues into ITI. The Bureau remains open to other ideas for specialized topics that could be usefully covered by a working group.

That is all the news for now, except I repeat the dates of upcoming meetings below, and look forward to seeing you at one of these:

Winter meeting: December 4 and 5, 2009 at the San Francisco Fed, with accomodation at the Hyatt Regency, right across the street.

Spring meeting: March 26 and 27, 2010, in Cambridge.

Sincerely,
Rob Feenstra
