I'm writing to NBER IO program members to ask for your input.
First, as you know, the NBER IO program will next meet in Cambridge on
Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19 (beginning at noon on Friday and
adjourning by 3:30 p.m. on Saturday). I expect the program and
invitations to go out by early next week. The NBER will again extend
invitations to attend NBER Summer Institute meetings to a small number
of graduate students. Attendance at the meeting as well as lunch on
conference days is covered; unfortunately, we cannot pay for travel or
accommodation expenses, and budget/space limitations prevent us from
including graduate students in the conference dinner. If you have a
student or two you would like to nominate for an invitation, please
send me their name, when you expect them to complete their PhD, and
sentence or two about them. Because space is quite limited, I would
encourage you to coordinate nominations with colleagues in your
department. I'll get back to you with whether we're able to invite
your nominated student once I have the full set of nominations.
Second, while we always have far more researchers who would like to
attend NBER program meetings than we have space and budget resources to
invite, we do try to extend invitations, at least on a rotating basis,
to a broad group of those most active in IO research. I rely on
program members to help me identify people who should be on that list.
If you have suggestions, particularly relatively recent PhDs, who we
should have on our radar screen, please let me know their name,
affiliation, and anything else you think would be useful information.
Finally, in addition to identifying researchers we should consider
inviting to program meetings, I welcome your suggestions for those we
should consider nominating for NBER program membership. Again, we're
constrained in the number we can add, but we welcome input on who
should be in the consideration set. Remember that NBER membership is
not an honorific, but is geared toward those who will be active
contributors to the program in its many dimensions, from work on
policy-relevant research and submission of NBER working papers, to
meeting participation and NBER grants. If you're uncertain whether
someone is already a program member, you can find the current list at:
http://www.nber.org/programs/io/io.html .
Thanks for your advice. I look forward to seeing you in July.
Best,
Nancy L. Rose
