NBER IFM Program personnel matters

Dear IFM Members:
Today is the official deadline for nominating new members of the IFM program. To quote from Jim Poterba's recent reminder: If you have a candidate to propose, but have not yet completed your nomination, the easiest way to proceed is to find the email that you received from Denis Healy on January 22, which included a personalized link to our new web-based nomination tool. If you cannot find that message, you can also send your nominee's c.v. and a brief nominating statement to dhealy_at_nber.org<mailto:dhealy_at_nber.org>.
Allow me to take the occasion to review recent IFM developments, which involve a broad rejuvenation of IFM personnel<http://www.nber.org/programs/ifm/ifm-mem.html>.
In 2013 we noticed that a number of young members of EFG and other NBER programs were doing exciting research, some of it international, but were not IFM members. In some cases, they had moved increasingly into open-economy topics after the 2008-09 global financial crisis. Many were already participating in IFM events from time to time. But we wanted to encourage more such participation. Accordingly we invited eight members of EFG and other NBER groups to cross-list their affiliations with IFM. They accepted and I hereby welcome them to IFM. Here is the list:
Manuel Amador<http://www.nber.org/people/manuel_amador>

Emmanuel Farhi<http://www.nber.org/people/emmanuel_farhi>

Guido Lorenzoni<http://www.nber.org/people/guido_lorenzoni>

Virgiliu Midrigan<http://www.nber.org/people/virgiliu_midrigan>

Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe<http://www.nber.org/people/stephanie_grohe>

Martin Uribe<http://www.nber.org/people/martin_uribe>

Adrien Verdelhan<http://www.nber.org/people/adrien_verdelhan>

Ivan Werning<http://www.nber.org/people/ivan_werning>

Let me also congratulate Laura Alfaro belatedly on her promotion to Research Associate.
You may wonder who makes decisions about appointing Faculty Research Fellows and Research Associates. Ultimately it is up to the Board of Directors of the NBER. But in practice the decisions are usually made by the IFM Advisory Committee. In effect, they recommend decisions to me, I recommend decisions to Jim Poterba, and he recommends decisions to the Board.

Three new members have recently agreed to join the IFM Advisory Committee: Gita Gopinath, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas and Linda Tesar. They join six others: Charles Engel, Kristin Forbes, Maurice Obstfeld, Kenneth Rogoff, Andrew Rose and Shangjin Wei. Marianne Baxter and Sebastian Edwards are now rotating off; I would like to thank them for their many years of service on the committee.
I am also rotating the co-organizers of some program meetings. Sebnem Kalemli-Ozcan will join Mick Devereux in co-organizing the IFM Summer Institute<http://conference.nber.org/confer/2014/SI2014/SI2014.html> this year (July 7-11). She replaces Pierre-Olivier, whom I thank for his three years of service in this capacity. Emmanuel Farhi will join Charles Engel in co-organizing the fall program meeting. He replaces Linda Tesar, whom I also thank for many years in this role.
Which brings us to the spring meeting. Gita Gopinath and Helene Rey are again co-organizing the program this year. They remind you all that they are still soliciting submissions for the March 28 meeting. The deadline is February 10. You can submit here<file:///E:\NBER\IFM\is%20http:\www.nber.org\confsubmit\backend\cfp%3fid=IFMs14>. I hope to see you there.
Best regards,
Jeff Frankel
IFM Director
