If you want to make recommendations for new appointments to the HE Program, please visit the web site in the message below and follow the directions in that message. Do not send the recommendation to me via email. This year the selection committee consists of Kitt Carpenter, Bob Kaestner, and me.

Subject: NBER Nominations for 2019

Dear Michael:

At the start of each year, we begin the appointments process for NBER affiliates. I am writing to ask for your help in identifying strong researchers who could make important contributions to the NBER as Faculty Research Fellows. If you know of a researcher who is doing interesting research that fits broadly within the scope of one of the NBER's twenty research programs, and who holds a primary appointment at a North American college or university, I hope that you will nominate that person. Most new NBER appointments are made at the Faculty Research Fellow (FRF) rank, which is typically associated with untenured faculty members. It is also possible to appoint more established researchers, those who have tenure, as Research Associates (RAs). To determine whether a potential nominee is already an NBER affiliate, please visit the "People" link on the NBER home page (nber.org), and type a potential nominee's name into the search box. Please devote special attention to identifying promising nominees who are m
embers of under-represented groups, including women and minorities, as well as researchers who may not be well-connected to the existing NBER network.

Nominations for this year's review cycle must be submitted by Sunday, February 3, 2018. The nominees for each program are reviewed by program directors in consultation with a small steering committee made up of leading program members. NBER's limited resources make it impossible to appoint all nominees; in recent years, we have received about four times as many nominations as available appointments. I will notify new affiliates of their appointments in late April.

To submit a nomination, please visit

and provide the candidate's name, a brief nomination statement, the URL where their CV can be found, and an indication of the program(s) for which they should be considered. When a nomination has been successfully recorded, you will receive an email confirmation. If you do not receive such a confirmation, or if you encounter any other difficulty in the nomination process, please contact Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org), 617-588-0312.

Thank you for your help in identifying outstanding researchers who have the potential to play an active role in the NBER. I look forward to receiving your nominations.
