With regard to the message below, Jim Poterba still is concerned about overcrowding and cost overruns at the SI. As you may recall, he had that same concern last year. So if you nominate graduate students to attend the SI, please try to nominate only one student.

Subject: Graduate Student Nominations: 2017 Summer Institute

Dear NBER Researchers -

This summer, the NBER will once again welcome promising graduate students and new Ph.D.s to the Summer Institute on a space-available basis. If you have a student who you would like to nominate, please visit our nominations webpage

http://nber.org/nominate/backend/form?id=N_G17[nber.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__nber.org_nominate_backend_form-3Fid-3DN-5FG17&d=DwMDaQ&c=8v77JlHZOYsReeOxyYXDU39VUUzHxyfBUh7fw_ZfBDA&r=VKBEDrI-4YYLaJVodCF1gKaIQ5dqQoyubJF8M_lSv1E&m=Pb78c_rqc33sLeFd23055chM8rjDBxLkO6H_RJeSGLo&s=I6zlxSfP8oyZbPHxnHnvnYnv8GTKN7SIKe6kKfRvhDw&e=>

and enter the student's contact information, a one-paragraph nomination statement describing the student's research and Ph.D. completion timetable, and the Summer Institute program for which you are nominating the student. You can find a list of Summer Institute meetings here:

Please make sure that you receive a confirmation email after you complete your nomination, and please do not send nominations directly to program directors. If you have difficulties with this system, please email Rob Shannon at rshannon_at_nber.org<mailto:rshannon_at_nber.org>.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, May 12. Program directors will review the nominations shortly thereafter, and students who are selected to participate will receive invitations from the NBER conference department in late May. Unfortunately, the NBER will not be able to cover students' travel and lodging expenses. In past years, some NBER affiliates have used their own research funds or secured university funds to help students defray their travel costs.

Several of our Summer Institute meetings are approaching the size limits of the rooms at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, so we may not be able to accept all nominated students. To avoid overcrowded meetings without space for invited participants, students must be registered to attend the meetings. Please do not extend additional "informal" invitations beyond those that are managed by the NBER Conference Department. I especially ask my Boston-based colleagues to refrain from suggesting that students attend the meetings if they have not received an official invitation.

We will strive to be as inclusive as possible. Priority will be given to students who were on the job market this year, or who will be on the market next year.

Thank you for your help in making the Summer Institute an exciting and vibrant gathering. I look forward to seeing you in July.

All best wishes.

Jim Poterba
