RE: Call for Papers, Hospitals and Health Care Program Meeting,
April 26, 2007

The spring meeting of the NBER Health Care Program will be held at the
NBER's Cambridge offices on Thursday, April 26, 2007.

This meeting will include conventional research presentations but will also
be an organizational meeting for a new project. It will be dedicated to
the theme of the economics of the hospital industry. This meeting is
intended to stimulate NBER research on hospitals, and anyone with an
interest in the industrial organization of hospitals and markets for
hospital care, the labor market aspects of hospitals, and other aspects of
the economics of hospitals is encouraged to attend. We welcome NBER
researchers who are new to the hospital industry, or even new to health
economics, along with experienced researchers in the economics of health care.

For the purposes of this project, the hospital industry includes acute care
hospitals, specialty hospitals, and other large organizations involved in
the direct provision of patient care.

Examples of issues that are relevant to the theme of the conference
include, but are not limited to:

    * The role of uncompensated care which hospitals provide more of it,
how it is related to service mix, and its impact on hospital financial
performance
    * The role of managerial structure and governance in determining
hospital performance
    * The impact of capacity expansion and regulation on hospital performance
    * The causes of variation in productivity across different types
hospitals, such as general acute and specialty facilities
    * The impact of IT investments on the clinical and financial
performance of hospitals
    * The impact of changes in Medicare reimbursement on clinical
performance and financial incentives

For this meeting, we welcome research in progress, which can be relatively
early or well along, as long as it is not published. We will also invite
leaders from the hospital industry who will discuss the economic and policy
challenges that they face today and expect to confront in the future. In
addition, we will reserve time for a discussion of possible directions for
an NBER Hospital project.

If you have research that you would like to present, please send a copy of
a paper and/or a detailed abstract to Rob, preferably electronically (as
WordPerfect, Word, or PDF File), no later than February 15, 2007.
