> at PAA
>
>A free introductory workshop on the new National Health and Aging
>Trends Study (NHATS) data will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012
>from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at the annual meeting of the Population
>Association of America in San Francisco, CA. The session will be in
>the Union Square 1-2 rooms.
>
>Over the past twenty years, demographers have established that the
>prevalence of disability has declined among the older population in
>the United States. The reasons for the decline and potential for
>future reduction of disability is less well understood. The NHATS
>is a new national panel study of Americans age 65 and older funded
>by the National Institute on Aging. The goals of the NHATS are to
>provide insights into factors that contribute to trends in
>disability prevalence, onset, and recovery; whether and why
>individual disability trajectories differ between groups; and the
>consequences of late-life disability for individuals, families, and society.
>
>The presentations will provide an overview of the research design
>and key components of the data and will highlight the usefulness of
>these new data for research areas of interest to PAA members,
>including disability trends and trajectories, economic consequences
>of disability, early life conditions, and family caregiving. The
>workshop will also provide information on accessing the baseline
>data through the online interface. Presenters will include Judith
>Kasper, Douglas Wolf, and Emily Agree.
>
>The intended audience for this introductory workshop includes
>advanced graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty,
>and any researchers interested in disability in later life. Further
>information about the study may be obtained at
><http://www.nhats.org>www.nhats.org. Registration is not required,
>but for planning purposes please email
><mailto:mniefeld_at_jhsph.edu>mniefeld_at_jhsph.edu if you know you will
>be attending.
