Dear Health Care Program Members -

As the new Director of the program, I would like to take this
opportunity to introduce myself (virtually) to those of you I haven't
met, and to profusely thank Alan Garber for his years of service to the
Health Care Program. Alan built this program from the ground up into
its current exciting and dynamic form. Through his excellent work in
putting together top notch programs, his diligence in recruiting the
best and the brightest economists working on health care issues, and his
good spirits and graciousness at meetings, he has created the premier
outlet for presenting and disseminating research on the economics of
health care. We are all in his debt.

I look forward to seeing many of you this coming week at summer
institute. One issue that I would like to discuss with you is the
prospect of moving to one in-year meeting (either fall or spring), in
addition to summer institute, rather than two (fall and spring). This
is a model which worked well when I was running the Children's Program
and I think it might work well for Health Care as well. This will only
work well, of course, if it succeeds in attracting increased attendance
to this in-year meeting. I would therefore like to seek each of your
opinions as to (a) whether moving to one meeting a year might increase
your rate of attendance and (b) what calendar point in the year would
most increase your odds of attendance. At this point the likely
candidates are late October or late March, but I am open to alternative
suggestions.

thanks

Jon Gruber
