To Faculty Research Fellows in the Health Care Program:

For those of you who attended Summer Institute this past week, I hope that
you enjoyed it as much as I did. The dinner for Marty Feldstein gave us a
chance to reflect upon his accomplishments and those of the NBER. In case
you were wondering, by the way, the Health Care Program started in the late
1980s, not 2000, and we've grown much as the NBER has.

I'm truly excited by Jim Poterba's leadership. He confirmed his interest
in and support for the Health Care Program during our review meeting. Like
Marty, he highly values the active participation of NBER family members and
would like to encourage everyone to avail themselves of the opportunities
that NBER provides.

As in the past, I'd like to remind you of the ways that you can participate
in NBER. First, the Working Papers series offer a great mechanism for
distributing the results of your research. Please be sure to submit your
best work. Working Papers in the Health Care Program have always had an
empirical focus, but policy-relevant work - as long as it doesn't make
policy recommendations - will also be considered for inclusion.

Second, please remember that the NBER can administer grants very
effectively and provides significant advantages such as very generous
retirement benefits. For more information about submitting grants through
NBER, please contact Alterra Milone (alterra_at_nber.org), who will likely
have started as the Bureau's new Director of Grant
Administration by the time you read this.

Finally, promotion to Research Associate is not automatic, but if you have
reached tenure in your university, you are eligible to be considered for
promotion. If you are now tenured, please let me know and send a current CV.

Thanks, and enjoy the rest of your summer. Best,

Alan Garber
