The NBER Health Economics Program will hold its first Summer Institute on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 in Cambridge, MA. I am interested in soliciting papers on issues related to the economics of substance use and abuse and economic approaches to the determinants of the health of infants, children, and adults. Since I want to allow sufficient time for discussion, six papers will be presented at the Institute. Since this is the first Summer Institute held by the Program, I will select the papers from abstracts and papers submitted by Health Economics Program members--including those with a primary or a secondary affiliation--and by persons not affiliated by the NBER. I will entertain submissions in the latter category because I want to use the Summer Institute as a vehicle to identify new additions to the staff of the program. I am sending this message to the Public Economics, Aging, Children's, Health Care, and Labor Studies Programs so that members of these programs can encourage persons not affiliated with the Bureau to submit papers.

If you have a paper that you would like to present, please send it or an abstract to me. I prefer electronic submissions in Word, PDF/Adobe, or WordPerfect to the e-mail address below. Alternatively you can mail the paper or abstract to me at the address below. Please do not submit it by fax. Please send all submissions by MARCH 31, 2001. Unfortunately space is limited at the Summer Institute, and thus it will not be possible to invite everyone who receives this call for papers. Invited participants will receive logistical information at the beginning of April.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Rob Shannon in the NBER Conference Department by phoning him at 617-868-3900 or by sending an e-mail message to him at rshannon@nber.org.
