Dear NBER Colleagues -

Like many of you, I have been hoping that we could gather in-person
for the 2021 Summer Institute.  However, given the uncertainties of the
pandemic's trajectory and the challenges that they pose for research
participation decisions as well as for meeting planning, the 2021 Summer
Institute will be held in a virtual format.  This will be the 44th
annual Summer Institute, and the second (and I hope last!) virtual one.
We will all miss the in-person networking and fellowship opportunities
that this gathering normally permits, but public health considerations
must take precedence in our planning.

The meetings will take place between July 12 and July 30, 2021.
The schedule may be found here:

This year's Martin Feldstein Lecture will be delivered by Mario Draghi,
the former President of the European Central Bank.  The Methods
Lectures, on "Causal Inference Using Synthetic Controls and Regression
Discontinuity Design," will be presented by Alberto Abadie of MIT and
Matias Cattaneo and Rocio Titiunik of Princeton University.  As in 2020,
most of the presentations will be live-streamed on YouTube.

The Summer Institute call for papers is now open:

The submission deadline is Monday, April 5 at 11:59pm PDT.

I look forward to working with the meeting organizers to make this
year's virtual Summer Institute a great success, and to welcoming you to
the conference in July.  All best wishes for staying safe and healthy
during this extraordinary time.
