Dear NBER Researchers -

This year, the NBER will once again welcome promising new Ph.D.s and
graduate students to the Summer Institute on a space-available basis.
To nominate a student, please visit

http://www.nber.org/nominate/backend/form?id=N_G16

You will need to enter your student's contact information and a
one-paragraph nomination statement, which should include a Ph.D.
completion timetable. Please indicate as well which program's Summer
Institute activities your nominee should attend. Some programs host
multiple meetings; a complete Summer Institute schedule can be found at

http://conference.nber.org/confer/2016/SI2016/SI2016.html

Please make sure that you receive a confirmation email after you
complete your nomination, and do not send nominations directly to
program directors. If you have difficulties with this system, please
email Summer Institute Director Rob Shannon (rshannon_at_nber.org) in the
NBER Conference Department.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, May 13. Program directors
will review the nominations shortly thereafter, and students who are
selected to participate will receive invitations from the NBER
conference department in late May. Participating students will need to
cover their own travel and lodging expenses. In the past, some NBER
affiliates
have used their own research funds or secured university funds to help
students to defray their travel costs.

Several of our Summer Institute meetings are approaching the size limits
of the rooms at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, and that we may not be able to
accept all nominated students. To avoid running out of space at meetings
or at lunch for our invited participants, graduate students must be
registered to attend the meetings. Please do not extend additional
"informal" invitations beyond those that are managed by the NBER
Conference Department. I especially ask Boston-based researchers to
refrain from inviting students to attend the meetings if they have not
received an official invitation.

Although some programs will be able to accept only a fraction of the
student nominations as a result of space constraints, we will strive to
be as inclusive as possible. Priority will be given to new Ph.D.s and
to students who will be completing their dissertations next year. Please
pay particular attention in your nominations to potential participants
from groups that are traditionally under-represented in the economics
profession and at the Summer Institute.

Thank you for your help in making the 2016 Summer Institute an exciting
and vibrant gathering. I look forward to seeing you in July. All best
wishes.
