Dear NBER Researchers -

I am writing to provide you with an update on a number of recent NBER
developments.

First, I would like to thank all of the more than one hundred
researchers who who helped to organize the 2014 Summer Institute, which
attracted more than 2500 participants - a new record. We have posted
videos from three Summer Institute events on the NBER website:

* Federal Reserve Board Vice-Chair Stanley Fischer's Martin Feldstein
Lecture on "Financial Sector Reform: How Far Are We?"

http://nber.org/feldstein_lecture_2014/feldsteinlecture_2014.html

* Daron Acemoglu and Matt Jackson's lectures on "Theory and Application
of Network Models"

and

* Panel Discussion on "The NBER Working Paper Series at 20,000," chaired
by Scott Stern and including presentations by Glenn Ellison, Joshua
Gans, Claudia Goldin, and me.

Second, I would like to inform you of several leadership changes for
various NBER activities.

* Martin Eichenbaum of Northwestern University has joined Jonathan
Parker of MIT, and succeeded Michael Woodford of Columbia, as
co-organizer of the NBER Macro Annual.

* Hanming Fang of the University of Pennsylvania has agreed to serve as
interim director of the China Working Group while the group's director,
Shang-Jin Wei of Columbia University, is on leave as the Chief Economist
of the Asian Development Bank.

* Jonathan Levin of Stanford has agreed to serve as director of the
Industrial Organization program. He succeeds Nancy Rose of MIT, who
stepped down when she was appointed Deputy Assistant Attorney General
for Economic Analysis at the Department of Justice.

* Michael Ostrovsky of Stanford has joined Parag Pathak of MIT, and
succeeded Susan Athey of Stanford, as co-director of the Market Design
working group.

I hope that you will join me in thanking Mike, Shang-Jin, Nancy, and
Susan for their important contributions to the NBER.

Third, Charles Radin, a journalist who was an editor at the Boston Globe
and who also led the News Office at Brandeis University, has joined the
NBER as our Director of Public Information. He will be leading an
initiative to enhance the research communication function at the NBER,
and he and I would welcome any suggestions that you might have in this
regard.

Finally, for those of you who are already looking ahead to next summer,
the 2015 NBER Summer Institute will begin on Monday, July 6, and will
conclude on Friday, July 24. I hope that you will mark your calendars
accordingly.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the NBER. I always welcome
suggestions for ways to enhance the NBER's role in advancing and
disseminating economic research, and I hope that you will contact me if
you have ideas in this regard. All best wishes.
