New NBER Nominations

Dear NBER Family Members:

I am writing to ask for your help in identifying promising young
faculty members who are strong candidates to join the NBER as Faculty
Research Fellows. If you know of a colleague, former student, or
other researcher who is doing interesting research that fits broadly
within the scope of one of the Bureau's twenty research programs, and
who has a primary appointment as a faculty member at a North American
college or university, I hope that you will nominate that person for
NBER affiliation.

The vast majority of new NBER appointments are made at the Faculty
Research Fellow rank, but if you know of a more senior researcher who
should be considered for a Research Associate appointment, such a
nomination would also be welcome. Research Associate nominees must
have tenure at a North American college or university; most new
Faculty Research Fellows do not have tenure. To determine whether a
potential nominee is currently an NBER affiliate, please visit the
NBER home page, click on "People", and then use the search box.

To be considered in this year's review cycle, your nomination must be
received no later than Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Nominations are
reviewed by NBER program directors, usually in consultation with a
steering committee made up of senior program members. I will notify
successful candidates of their new NBER affiliation, and inform
nominators of the status of their nominations, in late April.

The NBER seeks to appoint the best academic researchers in our
program areas, and I hope that you will devote special attention to
identifying promising candidates who are not well-connected to the
existing NBER network. We particularly encourage nominations of
candidates from under-represented groups including women and minorities.

Please send Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org, 617-588-0312) your
nominee's name, potential program affiliation, current c.v. and a
nomination statement of no more than two paragraphs. Please be sure
to indicate whether the nomination is for a Faculty Research Fellow
or Research Associate. Denis can answer any questions that you may
have about the nomination process.

I appreciate your help in identifying outstanding young researchers
who have the potential to play an active role in the NBER. I look
forward to receiving your nominations.

Jim Poterba
