Dear NBER Board Members, Researchers, and Staff:

I am sorry to convey the news that Anna Schwartz, an extraordinary
contributor to the field of monetary economics, passed away this morning
at the age of 96. Anna was an NBER Research Associate in the Monetary
Economics Program, and she was also the NBER's longest-serving
researcher. She joined the NBER seventy-one years ago. Anna was best
known for her collaboration, with Milton Friedman, on /A Monetary
History of the United States, 1867-1960/ (published in 1963). She was
also the author or co-author of many other influential books and
papers. She was a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic
Association, and a recipient of nine honorary degrees.

Anna was an undergraduate at Barnard, graduating at the age of 18, and
she received her Ph.D. from Columbia. She worked for several years at
the USDA and at the Social Science Research Foundation before joining
the NBER in 1941. She held a variety of teaching posts at CUNY, NYU,
Baruch College, and Brooklyn College over the course of her career.
Anna was a very active participant in a range of NBER activities and
even when she was no longer able to physically attend meetings, she
remained very interested in their content. Anna and her co-authors
circulated one working paper earlier this year, and two last year.

Anna was a very active contributor to the intellectual life of the NBER
and the economics profession, and she will be deeply missed. A link to
her obituary in the New York Times is provided below.
