Dear NBER Researchers -

I am writing to call your attention to a Washington briefing on
Monday, September 26, that the American Economic Association will be
sponsoring in Washington, D.C. The briefing is entitled "Hi-Beams for
the Economic Road Ahead: The Importance of the 2012 Economic Census for
Business and Government Decision-Making." I have attached a flyer for
this event, which will be chaired by Charles Schultze, former AEA
President and Chair of the AEA Committee on Government Relations. The
panelists will include

* Steve Landefeld, Bureau of Economic Analysis
* Katharine Abraham, Council of Economic Advisers
* Tim Maney, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
* Bill Shobe, Association for University Business & Economic Research

The briefing is being held in response to proposed cuts in Census Bureau
funding that may result in the cancellation of the 2012 Economic
Census. The attached memo from the AEA Committee on Economic Statistics
outlines the potential consequences of cancelling these data-collection
activities.

Given the importance of Census data to the research of NBER affiliates,
I thought you would want to be aware of this briefing and the motivating
circumstances. If you would like further information, please contact
Dan Newlon, the AEA's Director of Government Relations, at
dan.newlon_at_aeapubs.org or 571-499-7338.
