Dear NBER Family Members -

The NBER Summer Institute will be starting in just over two months,
and I look forward to welcoming you to Cambridge. As in past years, the
NBER will welcome promising graduate students to the Summer Institute on
a space-available basis.

Several of our Summer Institute meetings are approaching the space
constraints at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. This is both a powerful
endorsement of the appeal of the Summer Institute, and a growing
logistical challenge. Just five years ago, in 2006, there were 1339
registered Summer Institute participants. Last year, the total was
2128. To avoid excessive congestion, or running out of seats for the
registered participants, it is very important for graduate student
participants to be registered with the NBER conference department.

Potential student participants need to be nominated by an NBER
affiliate. Their participation must be approved by the program director
who will be overseeing the Summer Institute sessions they will be
attending, which will trigger an invitation from the NBER conference
department. Participating students are invited to join in Summer
Institute lunches, but they will need to cover their own travel and
lodging expenses. Some NBER affiliates use their research funds to
defray the cost of student participants.

If you have a student who you feel would benefit substantially
from attending this year's Summer Institute, please send a nomination
paragraph to your Program Director no later than Friday, May 20. Please
copy Rob Shannon (rshannon_at_nber.org) on your nomination, and indicate
which program's Summer Institute activities you are nominating the
student for. Please include a description of your student's work, when
he or she will be completing graduate study, and provide contact
information for the student. Space constraints make it very unlikely
that we can accept all nominations, but we will be as inclusive as
possible. Priority will be given to students who were on the job market
this year, or who will be completing their Ph.D. next year. Students
who are selected to participate will receive invitations in June.

Thank you for your help in making the Summer Institute an
exciting and vibrant gathering. All best wishes.

Jim
