Dear NBER Family Members:
I am writing to ask for your help in identifying promising young
faculty members who are strong candidates to join the NBER as Faculty
Research Fellows (FRFs). If you know of a colleague, former student,
or other researcher who is doing interesting research that fits
broadly within the scope of one of the Bureau's nineteen research
programs, and whose primary affiliation is with a North American
college or university, I hope that you will nominate that person for
NBER affiliation. Please send Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org) your
nominee's name, potential program affiliation, current c.v., and a
nomination statement of no more than two paragraphs. While the vast
majority of new NBER appointments are made at the FRF rank, if you
think there is a senior researcher who should be considered for a
Research Associate appointment, such a nomination would also be
welcome. To be a candidate for a Research Associate appointment, an
individual must have tenure at his or her North American home
institution. Newly-appointed Faculty Research Fellows are generally
not tenured. Please indicate in your nomination materials whether
your candidate should be considered for an FRF or an RA appointment.
The NBER encourages nominations of candidates from under-represented
groups including women and minorities, and I hope that you will
devote particular effort to identifying such nominees. Nominations
are reviewed by NBER program directors, usually in consultation with
steering committees for each program. To be considered in this
year's review cycle, your nominations must be received by January 31,
2011. To check on whether a potential nominee is currently an NBER
affiliate, you can search for them at the "People" tab on the NBER website.
The strength and vitality of the NBER depends critically on the
quality of our affiliated researchers. No activity is more important
than the appointment of new FRFs and RAs. I appreciate your help in
nominating outstanding young researchers who have the potential to
play an active role in the NBER. If you have any questions about the
