Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to send you a link to a new data public domain data product released today by the U.S. Bureau of the
Census with annual job creation and destruction series from 1976-2005 for the U.S. non-farm, private sector.
The new product is called Business Dynamic Statistics (BDS). The BDS will be updated annually and the objective is for the annual release to become more timely. The new series include annual tabulations of job creation and destruction for continuing, entering and exiting establishments. The classifications include firm size and firm age as well as sector and state.
The firm definition captures the activity of all establishments operating under common ownership and control within the U.S.
The firm age classification permits tabulations of firm startups (so that, for example, one can distinguish between jobs created by new establishments of new firms and new establishments of existing firms). Future releases will include amongst other things more industry and geographic detail.

The link to the BDS is:

A news release about the data product is at the following link:

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20081202005344&newsLang=en

This data product has been in development for a number of years with many persons contributing to the development.
A key supporter has been the Kauffman Foundation with a grant to Ron Jarmin, Steven Davis and myself. The BDS builds on the development of the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) at the U.S. Census Bureau that tracks all firms and establishments in the U.S. in the non-farm, private sector. The LBD was developed by Ron Jarmin and Javier Miranda at the Center for Economic Studies at Census.

Best,

John
