Dear NBER Family Members -

I hope that you are enjoying a pleasant and productive summer. Last month,
you received an email from Sue Colligan, who after over two decades at NBER
has decided to explore new and very different opportunities. Sue is
currently enjoying a wonderful summer working in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I
am very grateful to Sue for her long period of dedicated NBER service, and
to many members of the NBER staff who have stepped in and kept our grant
administration process working smoothly since Sue's departure.

I am delighted to report that starting July 28, Alterra Milone
(alterra_at_nber.org) will be the Bureau's new Director of Grant
Administration. Alterra, who joins us from the Engineering Systems Division
at MIT, is an experienced economics grant administrator, and I am confident
that she will not only preserve but enhance the NBER's reputation as an
efficient and supportive home for research grants. I know that you will
enjoy working with her. Alterra will be at NBER one day a week during July,
so if you are planning to apply for a research grant in the near future, and
particularly for an NSF grant in the August submission cycle, I would urge
you to contact her and let her know your plans in advance of the deadline.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that on the evening
of July 24, when we gather in Cambridge to celebrate Marty's three decades
of NBER leadership, we will present him with a collection of "thank you
letters" from NBER affiliates. If you would like to contribute to this
collection, it would be best to mail your letter, on letterhead, to Ms.
Gerri Johnson at NBER. You could also email a message to Gerri
(gjohnson_at_nber.org), who can print your message and include it in the
collection. Your contribution will help to make this a very special
collection.
I look forward to seeing many of you during this year's Summer Institute,
which at last count was scheduled to attract more than 1500 participants.
All best wishes.

Jim Poterba
