Dear EFG Program Members -

After 35 years at the helm of the NBER's Economic Fluctuations and
Growth (EFG) program, Bob Hall is planning to step down at the end of
the current academic year.We all owe Bob an immense debt for his wise,
energetic, and far-sighted program leadership. We will gather to thank
him at dinner on Friday July 12 2013 in Cambridge -- the night before
the Summer EFG Program Meeting.

Since I announced Bob's plans last summer, many program members have
advised me on the essential components of the EFG program's success, and
have offered their thoughts on the leadership transition.I am very
grateful to everyone who devoted time and effort to this process; I have
learned a great deal about the EFG program. It is not just the NBER's
largest, but also one of its most wide-ranging.

I am delighted to announce that two long-time EFG program members, Mark
Gertler of NYU and Pete Klenow of Stanford, have agreed to serve as
co-directors of the program starting this summer. I appointed two
co-directors in recognition of the program's breadth.Mark has been an
NBER affiliate since 1986.He served as one of the co-editors of the NBER
Macro Annual between 2001 and 2005, when he stepped down to become a
co-editor at the American Economic Review.Pete has been an NBER
affiliate since 1997, and he has been a co-director of the EFG working
group on Economic Growth since 2000.Mark and Pete have broad and
complementary interests that span the core topics in economic
fluctuations and long-term growth. They are eager to lead the program to
new heights, and I am very grateful to them for accepting this new role
of service to the economics research community.

I hope that you will join me this summer when we gather to thank Bob for
his program leadership, and to mark this important program
transition.All best wishes.
