Dear EFG Program Members:

Bob Hall, who has served as the director of the NBER's Economic
Fluctuations and Growth Program since the program's founding in 1978,
has informed me that he plans to step down from this role (but not from
his involvement in modern macro) during the summer of 2013. Bob has
played a central role in building this very successful and
intellectually vibrant program, and in shaping the direction of
macroeconomics research and the NBER's activities more generally. I am
very grateful to Bob for his program leadership, and I know that all of
the EFG program members share this sentiment.

In order express our collective thanks to Bob for all that he has done
to advance the EFG program, I hope that you will save Friday evening,
July 12, 2013 -- the evening before the Summer 2013 EFG program meeting
in Cambridge -- for a festive dinner in Bob's honor.

In the coming months, I plan to talk with many EFG program members to
solicit advice on selecting the next program director. I hope that you
will not hesitate to contact me, or to speak with me during the upcoming
Summer Institute or at another time, to share your views about the
essential attributes of the next program director or to suggest
potential candidates who might be well suited to this role.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Summer Institute later this
month - all best wishes.
