Dear EFG and ME Program Members -

I am sorry to report that Phillip Cagan, who was an active affiliate of
the NBER for more than three decades beginning in the 1950s, passed away
last Friday at the age of 85. He made important contributions to
monetary economics and was particularly well known for his analysis of
hyperinflation.

Phil was an undergraduate at UCLA, and he received his Ph.D. at the
University of Chicago in 1954. After graduation he worked at the NBER
as a full-time researcher for two years. He subsequently taught at
Chicago and Brown before moving to Columbia, where he was a faculty
member from 1966 until 1995. Phil was an active contributor to both the
research and public policy communities. He will be deeply missed.
