CALL FOR PAPERS

On July 12th, 2004 the NBER’s InterAmerican Seminar on Economics (IASE)
will have a one-day meeting in Cambridge, MA.

The meeting – which is part of the Bureau’s Summer Institute – will deal
with “Reducing Macroeconomic Vulnerability in Emerging Countries.” We are
interested in papers that analyze the different aspects of macroeconomic
vulnerability in emerging economies.

Some of the specific issues we are interested on include: (1) SDRM and
broadly the role of international institutions for lending and handling of
bankruptcy procedures; (2) the role of dollarized liabilities; (3) controls
on capital mobility; (4) debt maturity; (5) current account reversals; (6)
causes and consequences of “sudden stops.”

Papers do NOT have to be restricted to the Latin American experience. In
fact, we would like to encourage submissions that deal with other experiences.

The NBER will pay transportation and hotel costs for up to 4 days to
participants in the meeting. During the rest of the week, participants are
expected to attend the IFM meetings.

Please send proposals electronically (either paper or abstract) to Carmen
Reinhart (creinhar@umd.edu) and Sebastian Edwards
(sedwards@anderson.ucla.edu), before April 15th, 2004.

If you have any questions, please contact Rob Shannon at 617/868-3900 or at
