Dear EEE Program Members -

I am very sorry to share the news that Marty Weitzman, one of the
leading environmental economists of the last few decades, passed away
unexpectedly on Tuesday.  He was a Research Professor at Harvard
University and a Research Associate in the NBER's Environment and Energy
Economics Program.

Marty was an outstanding researcher who made fundamental contributions
in economic theory, environmental economics, macroeconomics, and the
study of comparative economic systems. His insights on "prices versus
quantities" are part of virtually every course in environmental
economics.  His recent work on discount rates and tail risk was directed
at two of the central questions in the economic analysis of climate change.

Marty received his undergraduate degree in math and physics from
Swarthmore, a masters degree in operation research from Stanford, and
his Ph.D. in economics from MIT.  He taught at Yale and MIT before
joining the Harvard faculty in 1989.  A fellow of both the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, Marty was a
creative scholar who was not afraid to tackle big questions and who
brought a novel perspective to every issue that he studied.  He will be
deeply missed.
