Six points to know

To: NBER's EEE Program Members
From: Don Fullerton (EEE Program Director)

I will try not to spam you too often, but this email contains six different important points. You may want to save it in your EEE file for future reference.

 1. The next EEE Program Meeting is Fri-Sat, April 17-8 in Cambridge, MA (organized by Olivier Deschenes and myself). About three papers will be joint with the Labor Studies (LS) program on Friday, and about 3-4 other EEE papers will be on Saturday. The deadline for submissions is January 31. I have received a number of submissions already. I have also received a couple of abstracts, but I advised those authors to submit a full paper by January 31; please send all submission to me at: dfullert_at_illinois.edu<mailto:dfullert_at_illinois.edu>

 1. The next EEE Workshop of the Summer Institute is Mon-Tues, July 20-21 in Cambridge (organized by Catherine Wolfram and Matt Kotchen). The submission deadline will be March 15, and you can send your submissions directly to Catherine at: wolfram_at_haas.berkeley.edu<mailto:wolfram_at_haas.berkeley.edu>

 1. The spring meeting each year is announced just to EEE members and is intended to help further develop our close-knit community, but let me know of somebody else's paper you think should be presented, especially if the author is a young assistant professor we ought to consider to invite to become a FRF in the Bureau (and you can always suggest individuals to nominate to become members). In contrast, the EEE Workshop at the Summer Institute has a wide invitation list. It has some constraints based on room size, but we don't mean to exclude any environmental or energy economist you think would make a good addition to the Summer Institute. You might ask such a person if they were invited last year, and if not send their name and email to me to get on the list.

 1. I want to encourage all EEE members to attend the both the April and July meetings. We perfectly understand you may have to miss a meeting from time to time, but please make every effort to attend, because it enhances the cohesion, continuity, and value to all the members of our program. Moreover, as was stated in your original appointment letter, your FRF or RA appointment involves both rights and responsibilities. It is a great gig, since NBER will pay for your travel twice a year to these meetings, will circulate your working papers most widely, and will help coordinate joint research efforts with which you can become involved. But conversely, you are expected to try to attend, to submit working papers, and to submit grant proposals through NBER.

 1. Finally, a word on finances. Our program is young, and we don't yet know where we stand between two models: The public econ program has lots of grants through the NBER, and it pays for travel of all PE members to all meetings. In contrast, the IO program has few grants through NBER, and does not pay for travel of members to meetings. Yet those IO members are happy to use their own university travel funds or grants to attend, because the meetings are so good. Personally, I hope we achieve something closer to the PE model, with grants run through the Bureau and with the Bureau paying for travel. We are not there yet, however, and so I am asking all of you to use your own university travel funds or your own grants to pay for travel if you can. If you do not have such funds, however, please still plan to attend, and NBER will pay for your travel.

 1. We have had joint meetings with PE, with the IO program, and in April with Labor Studies. Next spring, 2010, we will have a joint meeting with the Productivity Program of NBER. Let me know how you like these meetings before we commit beyond 2010. As always, please send me your ideas about joint research projects that could profitably be undertaken by members of the group. Also send other comments, complaints, and suggestions about how the Program could be improved.

Thanks, Don
