Dear DEV program members:

We hope everyone is well during what continue to be challenging times.
We're writing with a few program updates:

* *Summer Institute*. The DEV Summer Institute will be held Monday and
Tuesday July 25-26, 2022. The current plan is to hold these meetings in
person in Cambridge, MA, with some type of hybrid option for those who
cannot attend in person (exact details to be announced later). The NBER
will be announcing firmer plans for Summer Institute when the time gets
closer, but in the meantime, save the date! We hope to see as many of you
as possible in person at the meeting, especially after such a long hiatus
from in-person DEV conferences.

The program committee for the Summer Institute will be Jishnu Das, Ben
Faber, Eric Edmonds, Seema Jayachandran, Costas Meghir, Dilip Mookerjee,
Melanie Morten, and Tom Vogl. The call for papers will be forthcoming soon.
Thanks to all of them in advance for organizing the program!

* *Nominations*. As many of you have seen, it is now the season to nominate
people to join the NBER as Faculty Research Fellows (typically for
untenured scholars) and Research Associates (typically for tenured
scholars). NBER FRFs and RAs need to hold tenure-track positions at a North
American institution. A few announcements notes about this:
** The nominations will be reviewed by the NBER DEV advisory committee,
which in turn makes recommendations to the NBER President and Board of
Directors. The advisory committee consists of the two of us, Robin Burgess
(ex-officio as president of BREAD), and three senior DEV members who serve
on rotating three-year terms. The three rotating members are currently
Penny Goldberg, Eric Verhoogen, and Ted Miguel. Ted is joining for the
first time this year, taking the place of Pascaline Dupas who just
completed three years of service (thank you, Pascaline!).

** Please note that one nomination for a particular individual is
sufficient, and extensive nomination statements are not necessary! The
advisory committee reviews the CVs of all nominees without listing who
nominated whom. As a result, there is no benefit to an individual from
being nominated by many different people, and no need for nomination
'campaigns.'

** Finally, please note that we are quite limited by the NBER in our
ability to add new scholars to the NBER, with most programs adding 3 new
NBER members in a typical year. In selecting new members, NBER values
diversity along many dimensions.

Nominations can be submitted here now through Feburary 7:

With best wishes,
Ben and Seema
