Dear Research Colleagues -

I am sorry to share the news that Stanley Engerman, a research associate
in the NBER's Development of the American Economy program for over 45
years, passed away yesterday.  He was the John H. Munro Professor of
Economics, emeritus, at the University of Rochester.

Engerman was best known for his seminal contributions to the economics
of slavery.  He advanced this subject in a research program that spanned
many decades, and included /Time on the Cross /with Robert Fogel.  He
served as president of the Economic History Association and the Social
Science History Association, and was recognized as a Distinguished
Fellow by the American Economic Association.

Engerman received his undergraduate degree and an MBA from New York
University, and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins.  He taught briefly at Yale
before joining the faculty at Rochester, where he spent the rest of his
career.  He was a leading contributor to the DAE community at the NBER
and he will be deeply missed.
