Many of you knew John James, an economic historian who taught at the University of Virginia for four decades. I have attached a remembrance of John and pass along the following from his department:

As some of you know, we are mourning the passing of Prof. John James, who died unexpectedly last Friday. John joined the Department of Economics in 1973 and was a pioneering and leading scholar in the field of quantitative economic history. He was nearing completion of a book manuscript with Barnard College colleague David Weiman on banking-payment systems in 19th century America, and his highly regarded work included more than 50 scholarly articles on topics ranging from savings in Japan to wages and unemployment in the United States.
John also taught in the College's Corcoran Department of History and served as a visiting faculty member at a string of universities spanning several continents. The prestigious prizes and fellowships honoring his work included a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989, and he was a visiting fellow at Oxford University's All Souls College.
He was 68.
John's obituary in the The Daily Progress can be found here<http://www.dailyprogress.com/obituaries/james-john-allan/article_7bbd8b4a-16d5-5341-8a20-632d743bcd58.html>. For all of his scholarly achievements, John will also be remembered as a warm and supportive colleague. As Prof. Weiman wrote in one tribute, "This aspect of John's career can be best measured by the outpouring of affection from his 'juniors,' who now can proudly call him a colleague, collaborator, and friend. And they all describe him in virtually identical terms: brilliant, probing, curious, supportive, generous, decent, kind, humane, compassionate and passionate."
A memorial will be held next Saturday, December 13, at 2 p.m. in the Special Collections Auditorium, with a reception to follow. John's family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival (Virginia Chamber Music Foundation, P.O. Box 1491, Charlottesville, VA 22902) or to the Charlottesville Albemarle S.P.C.A. (3355 Berkmar Dr., Charlottesville, VA 22901).
