Dear scholars,

NBER’s Retirement and Disability Research Center has funding from the
Social Security Administration to support policy relevant projects and to
attract and develop research capacity in areas that advance knowledge about
SSA’s programs and impact. The Center is up for renewal, and we are shaping
our vision for the next five years, including the strongest possible slate
of project proposals for Year 1 (October 2023-September 2024).

Proposed projects need to address one or more of SSA’s 6 focal areas
(attached), but are much less time-consuming to prepare than an NSF or NIH
proposal. A longer-term project can be made up of a sequence of one-year
proposals, with the proposal for the second year following on the first,
etc. So this is a great opportunity to launch a project.

In addition to the Focal Areas outlined in the attachment, SSA has
highlighted special interest in these two areas:

1) Equity and how structural barriers may contribute to disparate outcomes
among people who have been historically underserved, marginalized, or
adversely affected by persistent poverty.
2) The COVID-19 pandemic and how it has impacted our programs and the
populations we serve. We are specifically interested in studies that
consider how Long COVID may affect health, employment, and participation in
Social Security programs.

*TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE PROPOSAL*: Please submit the project title, focal
area(s) you propose to address, and a brief abstract (*no more than* 2
paragraphs) by *March 7, 2023*. Submit this information by entering the
title and lead authors, and uploading a pdf with the abstract, including
focal/program areas and additional authors, here:
http://conference.nber.org/confsubmit/backend/cfp?id=RDRCs23

We will let you know by March 10th if we are able to include your project
and will ask for a 4-page proposal (double-spaced) by April 10th along with
information for your budget.

Each project typically covers up to two months of investigator salary paid
by NBER directly to researchers and roughly $9,000 for RAs. Funds for data
or other research expenses can also be included, with other budget
configurations also possible.

The overall strength of our proposal rides on the high-quality projects we
have been able to propose over the years. We hope to continue that record
and look forward to your submission.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss topic ideas, don’t
hesitate to reach out to any one of us. Thank you for your interest.
