Dear Colleagues,

I am sure you will be interested to know that the immediate threat to the
NLSY has been averted. As you may remember, despite receiving almost level
funding in the current federal Fiscal Year (FY12) budget, the Bureau of
Labor Statistics (BLS) had decided that for the remainder of FY12, it was
going to cut NLS funding from $5.6 million to less than $1 million –
essentially eliminating the program for this year. This reduction had
resulted in an immediate cessation of field activities.

Perhaps as a result of letters, emails, and calls to Secretary Solis, BLS
Acting Commissioner Jack Galvin, and Congress, BLS has reversed its
decision and reinstated funding to the NLS program for FY 2012. Future
funding for the NLS program remains uncertain, however. If you would like
more information, please do not hestitate to contact me.

Janet
