To Members of NBER's Children's Program,
Here is a funding opportunity that may be of interest...

The Foundation for Child Development is inviting applications for its 2004 Changing Faces of Americas Children - Young Scholars Program, designed to support a new generation of early career scholars.  These fellowships aim to stimulate fundamental and policy-relevant research on issues affecting the development, early education, and health needs of immigrant children.  The fellowship supports young scholars in identifying and understanding the challenges faced by immigrant children and their families.  Proposals may include research designs for an empirical study, pilot work for a larger scale research project that will seek funding from other public and private funders, or analysis of data previously collected.

Fellowship recipients are expected to produce a book or article(s) suitable for publication, and to articulate how their research may potentially inform policies regarding young newcomer children.  The grant is intended to buy-outteaching time and to underwrite research costs, including research assistance and travel to study sites.

Eligibility requirements: a doctoral degree within the past 10 years prior to June 30, 2003 (for MDs, five years from completion of residency); a position as a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in a U.S. college or university; and a degree in the behavioral, social sciences or allied professional field (e.g., public health, social work, public policy, education, nursing, medicine).

The maximum amount of funding to be awarded is $150,000 (inclusive of overhead which is limited to 15% of direct costs) and may be used for research expenses and salaries. The funds are to be used over a minimum period of one year and a maximum of three years.  There is no limit on the number of applications from any single institution.  Completed proposals must be submitted to the foundation on or before October 1, 2003.
