Dear Colleagues,

The NIH recently issued a request for information (RFI) regarding an
initiative, Environmental influences on Children's Health Outcomes (ECHO),
which will replace the National Children’s Study (NCS). Instead of the
massive new cohort that was originally envisioned, NIH is contemplating
augmenting a number of existing cohorts to advance our understanding of the
role of biological and environmental factors on children’s growth and
development. Comments are being accepted (
http://dev.grants.nih.gov/grants/rfi/rfi.cfm?ID=45) through August 14, 2015.

This new initiative may not have much value for the social science research
community if all the cohorts followed end up being drawn from medical
studies. If you would like to send comments emphasizing the importance of
including SES determinants of health and/or extending existing social
science cohort studies, more information is available at the links below:

The RFI is posted at:.

Best wishes
Janet
