Dear AP and IFM Progam Members -

I am very sorry to share the news that long-time NBER Research Associate
David Backus passed away last Sunday, a victim of leukemia. Dave, who
received his Ph.D. from Yale, was the Heinz Riehl Professor of Economics
at NYU's Stern School of Business. He taught at Queen's University and
the University of British Columbia, and was a staff economist at the
Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, before joining the NYU faculty.

Dave was known for his wide-ranging contributions in both international
macroeconomics and financial economics. He used tools from asset
pricing to inform questions of exchange rate behavior, capital flows,
monetary policy, and economic fluctuations. He was an active
contributor to many NBER activities, and he will be deeply missed.
