New NBER appointments and other things

Dear AP members,

I am happy to announce that we have several new members: Andrea Frazzini, Robert Novy-Marx, and Neng Wang have joined as Faculty Research Fellows, Ravi Bansal has joined as Research Associate, and Ellen McGrattan and Narayana Kocherlakota (who are NBER members in the EFG group) are now cross-listed with our group. In addition, Dimitri Vayanos and Annette Vissing-Jorgensen were promoted to Research Associate.

Let me use this opportunity to mention a few other things that I just learned about our group. (Each summer, Marty Feldstein reviews each NBER member's contribution to his/her group with the respective program director, and so I had the chance to go over the data collected on our group with him.)

The data show that we are a very active NBER group. We are good about publishing working papers in the NBER series and about attending our group's meetings. However, there are two areas where our group could improve, and so I would like to ask you for your help.

First, our group is notoriously bad about applying for NSF grants. These grant overloads are the way the NBER, and thus our meetings, get funded, and since our group is especially large and therefore expensive, we need to chip in. Please apply for these grants and run them through the NBER. Getting an NBER grant has many advantages, such as summer money on top of what you may already get from your home institution, and they represent a quality stamp on your ongoing research. The application process through the Bureau is particularly easy; they will help you fill out forms, etc. Btw, there are a couple of institutions that provide some kind of a kickback for running the grant through them instead of the NBER (for example, they pay tuition for PhD students when you hire them as RAs with NSF money.) It would help the group if you send Sue Colligan an email and explain this to her.

Another area where we could improve is that we have a number of inactive members. If you have not attended any meetings during the last year, you should know that we miss you!!! If you have not attended because you lost interest in the group, please let me know. We face severe constraints on the size of our group, and there are many great people who are currently not in the NBER and who would love to be.

Btw, I have started putting together a list of people who are not members but who should receive our call for papers. If you see a name that I may have forgotten, please let me know. Also, in January, you will get an email reminder about nominations for new members.

Best wishes and a good summer!

Monika
