NBER: Support for the Economics of National Security

Subject: Support for the Economics of National Security
From: Martin Feldstein (msfeldst@nber.org)

I believe that the Economics of National Security is probably the most
neglected important subject in economics. To try to fill that gap, the
NBER has organized a working group on the Economics of National
Security. The working group organized a meeting last February and another
in the Summer Institute. I think the papers and discussions at both
meetings were very interesting and showed that economists with a variety of
different approaches can contribute to this important area.

We will hold another meeting on February 24th. An announcement and call
for papers will come later. If you did not get a notice of the previous
sessions and would be interested in attending, send me an email now.

We also have some funds to support research and writing in this area. If
you have an idea for something dealing with National Security, broadly
defined, please send me a brief description -- not more than half a
page. We will select a few of these proposals. If your proposal is
selected, you will receive $5000 when you submit a paper of a quality that
can go into the NBER working paper series. When the paper is accepted by a
professional journal, you will recevie an additional $5000. So the reward
for a successful paper in this area is $10,000 to the author. In addition,
you can have up to $3000 for expenses -- data acquisition, research related
travel, etc.

I will look forward to hearing from you if you are interested in coming to
the next meeting on February 24th and if you would like to start a
research study.
