Subject: NBER Meeting

To members of the asset pricing and corporate finance groups:
Marti Feldstein wants to explore whether the NBER should organize a
research project on the measurement of risks in financial institutions.
I have been asked to help with this effort. Since practitioners and
regulators have done so much work on this issue, he suggested that the
NBER organize a meeting where members could learn about the state of
affairs in practice and about the thinking of practitioners and
regulators on risk measurement (at this point, with more of a credit risk
perspective), including where they think academics could contribute with
their research. This meeting will take place in Cambridge on September
21 and I am organizing it with the help of Mark Carey at the Fed and Jim
Wilcox at OCC. We will have presentations from regulators (Fed, Bank of
England, OCC) as well as from practitioners selected from banks,
investment banks, consulting firms, and rating agencies. This will also
give us an opportunity to think about the research issues that a program
might focus on. The meeting will start around 10 am and end by 4 pm. All
members
from the asset pricing and corporate finance groups are invited to the
meeting and the
NBER will pay the way of the members who attend. The conference department
will send a formal invitation to all group members. If you have any
questions, do not
hesitate to e-mail or call me.
