Dear Aging, Health Care, and Health Economics Program Members -

Alzheimer's disease is one of the fastest growing health
conditions in the U.S., and the National Institute of Aging has made a
major commitment to expand research on all aspects of Alzheimer's and
related diseases.  This commitment includes potential support for
research by economists that examines the socio-economic determinants of
the onset of dementia, the implications of rising Alzheimer's prevalence
for the health care delivery system and the associated long-term care
industry, and the role of treatment and intervention innovations in
caring for Alzheimer's patients.  Meetings of the NBER Program on Aging
have, and will continue, to provide a forum for discussions of
Alzheimer's-related research, and the NBER more generally can provide
support for researchers seeking NIA funding for projects on this topic.
With regard to grant support, there is an opportunity in the next month
to apply for "Alzheimer's related supplements" to existing NIA grants.
If you have a current, or soon-to-start, project that could benefit from
NIA support, please contact Joan Stillwell <stillwel_at_nber.org> in the
next few days with a short description of your project.  If there is a
plausible fit between the project and existing NBER-based NIA grants,
Joan will follow up to see if there is a way to craft a funding request.
Funding could be available as soon as this summer.

Even if you do not have a current project, if you are considering
research on Alzheimer's-related issues and would like to be informed of
NBER-related Alzheimer's initiatives, please let Joan know so that we
can keep you apprised of further developments.  Thank you for your
ongoing support of NBER.
